Ebola Scare Onboard US Airways Flight 845

October 10, 2014 - Not a good idea to shout out you have the Ebola virus as a joke on a commercial airline, on Wednesday a passenger onboard US Airways Flight 845 did just that.

Flight 845 had departed Philadelphia International Airport (KPHL) for Punta Cana International Airport, Dominican Republic (MDPC/PUJ), on its final approach for Punta Cana the passenger said "I have Ebola. You're all screwed" the passenger further stated he had recently been to Africa.

Flight 845 had departed Philadelphia about 10 AM and landed at Punta Cana about 1:15 PM, upon its arrival the carrier and Dominican officials decided they were not going to take any chances. First responders which included heath officials and police met the Boeing 757 at its arrival gate (Gate A26) dressed in protective HAZMAT gear.

Before the first responders boarded the aircraft a US Airways flight attendant instructed the passengers to sit in their seats, remain clam and quiet at which time passengers began to record the events with their telephones.

The attendant further explained to the passengers that health officials would be boarding the aircraft, "It's going to look worse than it is." The attendant also said to the passengers onboard over the intercom "I think the man that has said this is an idiot, and I'll say that straight out, and if you hear me that's fine."

Just after the announcement from the flight attendant the first responders boarded the aircraft in bubble-like suits and approached the passenger who had indicated he had Ebola. At which time the passenger was escorted off the plane. As the passenger was being escorted down the aisle he said "I was just kidding I ain't from Africa!"

In a statement US Airways said "We are following the direction of, and strictly adhering to, all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines in place for airlines in response to the Ebola virus." It wasn't until two hours later that the other passengers were allowed to deplane the aircraft.
