July 29, 2010 - On Wednesday, about 10 AM local time Airblue Airlines a Pakistani air carrier, operating an Airbus A321, Flight ED202 enroute from Karachi on approach to Benazir Bhutto International Airport (ISB), Islamabad under heavy rain and poor visibility crashed in a ball of flames into a heavy wooded area in Margalla Hills in Islamabad killing all 152 onboard.

Flight ED202 departed from Karachi just before 8:00 am (0300 GMT). It has been reported that the pilot, Pervez Iqbal Choudry was instructed by air traffic control to perform a go-around due to traffic on the runway.

The Airbus A321 was carrying 146 passengers of those passengers 5 children were onboard and a crew of four flight attendants, a co-pilot and captain. Captain Pervez Iqbal Choudry was one of the senior pilots at Airblue with more than 20 years of flight experience.

Airblue operates scheduled flights operating 30 daily services linking four domestic destinations and international services to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Muscat and Manchester. It carries over a million passengers a year and its main hub is at Jinnah International Airport, Karachi.

It?s believed that the pilot may have veered off course on his go-around and that the pilot and air traffic control may have lost radio communications due to weather conditions of monsoon rains and thick clouds. The Airbus A321 was manufactured in 2000 and leased to Airbue in January 2006. The aircraft has 34,000 logged flight hours and 13,500 flights.

Witnesses report they saw the Airbus A321 fly at an unusually low altitude before crashing in a gorge between two hills, there was a loud boom, a cloud of smoke and fire. Recue officials reported initially their rescue attempts had been hampered by weather conditions. Once on the seine it was extremely gruesome, with charred body parts strewed about. "I saw a big ball of smoke and fire everywhere with big pieces of aircraft rolling down the hill," said police official Haji Taj Gul.

About 50 bodies have been pulled from the wreckage. Most of the aircraft was buried under wooded debris and as a result heavy equipment will need to be brought in before rescue workers will be able to pull the remaining passengers out of the plane. Rescue officals report there is no signs of survivors.

The Pakistani government has declared a day of national mourning and called off all cabinet meetings. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed grief over the "tragic incident" and offered prayers to those who had died in this tragic event and to their families and the country?s flags were ordered to fly at half-mast. Islamabad, Pakistan (AHN) - Interior Minister Rehman Malik has confirmed all onboard Flight ED202 were killed in crash. U.S. Embassy spokesman Richard Snelsire has confirmed that at least two American citizens were on board.

?Airblue, with great sadness, announces the loss of flight ED 202 inbound from Karachi to Islamabad. The flight crashed during poor weather and thick fog. We regret the loss of life and are investigating the exact circumstances of this tragedy. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the passengers and crew.?
